A World-Famous Attraction is The San Diego Zoo With Animals From Around The Globe

A must-see attraction in Balboa Park is the San Diego Zoo (5), which celebrates its 94th birthday this year. The 100-acre facility is an international animal experience where guests can see some of the earth’s rarest wild life including giant pandas from China, tree kangaroos from New Guinea and river hippos from Africa. The San Diego Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals, representing 800 species, making up a diverse collection of animals many of which are rarely seen at other zoos.

Don’t miss the zoo’s newest attraction, Elephant Odyssey. The 7.5-acre exhibit features expansive naturalistic habitats, a place for children to dig for replica fossils, and life-size models of prehistoric animals. It also houses a 2.5-acre exhibit that is home to a herd of nine elephants. Plus, you can now get a special behind-the-scenes look at the elephants in the Elephant Care Center. At this part of the exhibit, you can see zoo keepers and veterinarians working with the elephants. Elephant Odyssey gets you so close to the elephants, you can almost feel their breath!

Because the zoo encompasses 100 acres, it’s a good idea to take the 35-minute guided, double-decker bus tour. Try to get a seat on the left side of the bus; you will see more animals. During the three-mile ride you will view 75 percent of the zoo grounds, particularly the areas that would take some exertion to reach on foot.

The Zoo is also a fantastic venue for weddings, birthday parties, Rehearsal dinners and more. Great for kids is the Safari Sleepover which includes a behind the scenes look at the Elephant Odyssey and the Zoo after dark.

During the winter months, the San Diego Zoo opens at 9 a.m. and closes its gates at 5 p.m. In the summer, gates are open 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Visitors may remain on the grounds one hour after closing. Best value admission includes a bus tour, express bus and Skyfari aerial tram package which is ($37) for ages 12 and older; ($27) for children 3 –11. Children 2 and under and active-duty U.S. military in uniform with ID are admitted free.

On the windswept tip of Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument is the third most visited national monument in the United States. From this vantage point high above the ocean, you will be able to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of San Diego and beyond.

On a clear day you can see the Mount Palomar Observatory 50 miles away. Don’t leave San Diego without visiting this monument and seeing the incredible view. The best and least confusing way to get to the Cabrillo National Monument is to follow Rosecrans Street to Cañon Street, turn right; go to Catalina Boulevard and veer left. The monument is open daily 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m., and there is an entrance fee of ($5) per car, or ($3) for walk-ins and cyclists.

The Monument is open 365 days a year, including all weekends and holidays, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, for security purposes, the main gate into Cabrillo National Monument is closed at 4:45 PM, and all visitors must exit the park by 5:00 PM.

Casino Pauma has most of the bells and whistle that the gigantic San Diego casinos have except one. It’s smaller, which is an asset if you like the feeling of being a big fish in a small pond. Instead of there being a maze of rooms filled with slot machines, you’ll find plenty to choose in one large ballroom.

Card players won’t get lost in the shuffle either. Casino Pauma offers two dozen tables in a room away from the slot machines. This 42,000 sq. ft. casino is all under one huge roof, yet it isn’t big enough to get lost, as some casinos are. And if you are a smoker, you’ll enjoy the fact that smoking is allowed throughout the casino. So you won’t have to go outside to have a smoke and then come back and resume your gambling.

And you won’t have to search around for their cocktail lounge either. It’s the first thing you see when you step inside the casino. It’s thatched roofed architectural rendering is the theme portrayed throughout the casino. It begins and ends with the beautiful, block long palm tree lined entrance to the casino itself. While there are lots of parking spaces the casino isn’t so large that you have to flag down a tram just to get to the entrance. Yet, there are handsome doormen on hand to greet you and open the doors to one of the friendliest casinos in San Diego.
