Be sure to visit this winery with its medieval flavor and artistic courtyard fountain. The cost for a regular tasting is ($5), which includes five different tastes and a 12-oz. souvenir wineglass. They also offer a premium tasting ($10) of five tastings and a souvenir 19-oz. wineglass.

As an added quality factor, all of their wines are sealed with Nomacorc, a synthetic closure that has all the attributes of natural cork without the chance of cork taint. No winery using natural corks can guarantee that none of their wines are tainted. It’s a game of Russian roulette you don’t play with Baily wines.

Also at the winery is Carol’s Restaurant (951-676-9243), offering casual indoor and patio dining.

Open seven days a week, 11 a.m.–sunset and their call center is open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Experience the exhilarating excitement of sitting in the open cockpit of a biplane, or feel the adrenaline rush of air combat under the supervision of real fighter pilots, while you do loops and barrel rolls in a WWII war bird.

They even offer a Sunset Special Fly/Dine Package that includes an hour-long ride followed by dinner for two at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Vivace Restaurant. Use their coupon in this book for $25 off any regular price ride. For the experience of a lifetime that you won’t get anywhere else, let Barnstorming Adventures take you for a thrilling, sky-high airplane ride.

Fly air combat in their special dogfight aircraft! Just like you’ve seen on TV and in the movies. Except you’ll be doin’ the yankin’ and bankin’! This is a hands-on, heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping aerial combat mission.

You’ll fly under the guidance of your assigned pilot (most of their pilots are real active-duty Marine Corps and Navy fighter pilots). But make no mistake, you’re calling the shots, literally! No pilot’s license or experience required.

Reservations are required for all flights. They generally fly dogfights every Saturday and Sunday at 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, (and 5 PM during the Summer). Weekday dogfights are occasionally available, but since most of their pilots are active-duty fighter pilots, weekday scheduling is not always possible. If you bring your own enemy, it’s best to call 1-2 weeks in advance to get the time you want.

If they’re going to provide your adversary (a.k.a. target), you generally need to give them 3 weeks notice. You’ll be booked as “standby” until they find you a match. However, last minute scheduling is sometimes possible. Call 1-800-SKY-LOOP (1-800-759-5667) to reserve your flight.

On the windswept tip of Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument is the third most visited national monument in the United States. From this vantage point high above the ocean, you will be able to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of San Diego and beyond.

On a clear day you can see the Mount Palomar Observatory 50 miles away. Don’t leave San Diego without visiting this monument and seeing the incredible view. It’s just 20 scenic minutes from downtown, and the views of the city, bay and ocean are absolutely magnificent. You’ll also get a good perspective of San Diego’s ideal geographic location.

The best and least confusing way to get to the Cabrillo National Monument is to follow Rosecrans Street to Cañon Street, turn right; go to Catalina Boulevard and veer left. The monument is open daily 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m., and there is an entrance fee of ($5) per car, or ($3) for walk-ins and cyclists.

The Monument is open 365 days a year, including all weekends and holidays, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, for security purposes, the main gate into Cabrillo National Monument is closed at 4:45 PM, and all visitors must exit the park by 5:00 PM.

A top attraction here is the Art for Wildlife Galleries (A) at suite 101 (619-435-4342). This gallery deserves a special visit. The paintings, prints, sculptures, wood carvings and pottery are works of art that anyone would be proud to display in their home or office.

The other must-see gallery is the Stephen Clayton Galleries (G) at suite 111 (619-435-1319). Featured here are world renowned, collectable artists such as Dr. Seuss and Mackenzie Thorp. Plus, they have many gallery shows with the artrists in attendance. Meeting the artist is always a treat. They have also done exquisite framing for the past 15 years.

Also catering to travelers is the Mascot Boutique (B) in suite 103 (619-435-0548). They have a fine collection of Hawaiian print clothing with new arrivals weekly including Baggallini fashion bags, hats, sunglasses and shell inlay jewelry.

Tucked in between these delightful shopping discoveries is Coronado Cupcakery (C) in suite 104 (619-437-0166). They make dozens of delicious varieties of cupcakes to snack on. Aptly named Regali Gourmet & Gifts (D) in suite 105 offers unique gift ideas such as hand painted ceramics, truffles, chocolates, gourmet food items, gift baskets for all occasions and souvenir items galore.

The French Room (E) in suite 106 is a classic shoe store carrying 50 styles of name-brand shoes such as Merrell and the always popular Onex shoes. They also carry designer inspired handbags, jewelry and resort wear fashions.

The classic one-stop gift shop has to be La Camisa (F) in suite 109 (619-435- 8009). They offer the classic items you’ll need for a Southern Californian vacation as well as gift items to take home. These items include seashells from the ocean and beach accesssories such as sunglasses and flip flops.

Always popular is Scottish Treasures (M) at suite 213 (619-435-1880). It’s filled with everything Scottish including colorful kilts. You’ll even find British food, clothing, thistle pottery, Belleeck china, bears in tartan and more. Everything in the store has a Scottish or Irish flare! You’re bound to have fun browsing through this store.

Since Coronado is a resort town you arebound to find a wide variety of resort shops. Men’s Island Sportswear (O) at suite 218 (619-437-4696) is one of these shops. It has name-brand items from Reyn Spooner, Kahala D’Accord, Bamboo Cay, Scala, Aurey’s Hawaiian shirts and Tshirts with cool names on them. They also carry a wide range of US military hats.

Captain Coronado (Q) in suite 222 (619-435-1268) keeps up with the theme of resort wear and gift items. They offer a fine selection of wind chimes, candles, T-shirts and home decor items.

They even have an often in-demand post office called Postal Unlimited (N) in suite 217 (619-435-3100). What’s a gift if it can’t be gift wrapped or mailed home so you don’t have to lug it around?

More good news is that every Tuesday afternoon is a Farmer’s Market (S). From 2:30 p.m.–6 p.m., you can do what the locals do. You can shop for fresh vegetables, a bouquet of fresh flowers and eat hot snacks like kettle corn prepared on the spot. It’s all grown and sold by local farmers.

Coronado Ferry Landing also offers free concerts throughout the year. So for a fun excursion with plenty of places to shop and wonderful places to dine, put a visit to Coronado Ferry Landing at the top of your to do list.

When you think that you’ve seen it all, it’s really only the beginning when you opt to rent a bicycle, surrey or Roller blades from Bikes & Beyond (V) at suite 122 (619-435-7180). This side of Coronado Island has a bayside sidewalkthat is best explored by bike. When you see people riding them, it makes you want to do it, too. Plus, Coronado is totally flat so you can easily explore the majestic tree-lined neighborhoods as well.

But the fun doesn’t stop here. Besides shopping at Coronado Ferry Landing, it’s also home to delicious places to eat and drink. Almost all have romantic bayfront ocean views.

Having a Burger King (R) in suite 201 (619-590-1122) certainly attests to the notion that Coronado Ferry Landing has something for everyone’s taste and pocket book.

After a delicious meal head for their Cold Stone Creamery (P) in suite 220 (619-437-6919). This popular ice cream shop offers over 50 delicious flavors. And every selection is made to order.

Or is it a visit to Kaffeen’s Espresso Cart (K) (619-987-5234) for a freshly ground brew of your favorite coffee in regular or decaf. And be sure to top it off with their homemade chocolate whipped cream. Then find a nice bench to enjoy your treat and a harbor veiw.

Carlsbad Village is home to romantic restaurants and fascinating little shops. One great discovery is Carlsbad’s most photographed historic site, which is now home to the Ocean House Restaurant (7). Ocean House was originally one of two Victorian homes. This building was constructed in 1887, which was a year before the construction of the famous Hotel del Coronado in Coronado by two of Carlsbad’s founding fathers. Their Sunday Champagne Brunch ($22.95) is extremely popular.

At the opposite end of the block to the north is Witch Creek Winery (8) at 2906 Carlsbad Blvd. (760-720-7499). Come in and taste their delicious handcrafted wines, including their award-winning red wines. Tastings are ($5) and you can keep the complimentary logo glass. The tasting room is also home to special events such as intimate concerts, dinners and mixers. They’re open Sun.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–5 p.m. and Fri.–Sat., 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m. with extended summer hours. See San Diego Wineries chapter.

While in the Village, don’t miss the Carlsbad Village Farmer’s Market (3) held at 2930 Roosevelt St. between Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive. Local vendors gather to sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to flowers, specialty foods and crafts. It takes place Wed., 1 p.m.–5 p.m. and Sat., 1 p.m.–5 p.m. rain or shine. Plus, it’s California Certified, which means only the freshest produce from local farmers is offered.

A great reason for visiting the Fiesta de Reyes is dining at their excellent restaurants. So whatever you do, don’t miss the opportunity to experience their two amazing restaurants, which are Casa de Reyes Restaurant (H) and the Barra Barra Saloon (S). Both restaurants are open daily 10 a.m.–10 p.m. They both accept AE, DISC, MC, VISA.

Casa de Reyes Restaurant (H) (619-220-5040) is a real treat when dining in Old Town’s State Historic Park. The best way to get to the Casa de Reyes Restaurant is to enter via the south entrance. Located in the center of the courtyard, you can drink one of their famous frosty margaritas while dining under the stars. The atmosphere is warm and festive and the food is delicious. Feast on flavorful Mexican cuisine like chili relleno and sizzling fajitas, and be sure to try one of their legendary house margaritas. An added plus is that they also feature live Mexican music while you dine.

Located just outside the Fiesta de Reyes southern entrance is the Barra Barra Saloon (S) (619-291-3200). The patio overlooking Old Town Plaza is the perfect place to enjoy the historical ambiance with a fabulous meal and a frosty margarita. They also offer indoor dining in their two southwestern inspired dining rooms. Entrees of special note include the Chicken Mole Oaxaca topped with pablano mole sauce. Another winner is their fajita platter with your choice of chicken, beef or shrimp.

Be sure to take advantage of Barra Barra’s many food and drink specials offered throughout the week. On Mondays kids eat free with a paying adult. Come back on Friday and Saturday nights for ($1) tacos 10 p.m.–12 a.m. Happy Hour is Mon.–Fri. 4 p.m.–7 p.m. with the legendary “Best Margarita in San Diego…Only Five Bucks!” It’s served in a tall glass and is sure to grab your attention!
