Open seven days a week, 11 a.m.–sunset and their call center is open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Experience the exhilarating excitement of sitting in the open cockpit of a biplane, or feel the adrenaline rush of air combat under the supervision of real fighter pilots, while you do loops and barrel rolls in a WWII war bird.

They even offer a Sunset Special Fly/Dine Package that includes an hour-long ride followed by dinner for two at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Vivace Restaurant. Use their coupon in this book for $25 off any regular price ride. For the experience of a lifetime that you won’t get anywhere else, let Barnstorming Adventures take you for a thrilling, sky-high airplane ride.

Fly air combat in their special dogfight aircraft! Just like you’ve seen on TV and in the movies. Except you’ll be doin’ the yankin’ and bankin’! This is a hands-on, heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping aerial combat mission.

You’ll fly under the guidance of your assigned pilot (most of their pilots are real active-duty Marine Corps and Navy fighter pilots). But make no mistake, you’re calling the shots, literally! No pilot’s license or experience required.

Reservations are required for all flights. They generally fly dogfights every Saturday and Sunday at 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, (and 5 PM during the Summer). Weekday dogfights are occasionally available, but since most of their pilots are active-duty fighter pilots, weekday scheduling is not always possible. If you bring your own enemy, it’s best to call 1-2 weeks in advance to get the time you want.

If they’re going to provide your adversary (a.k.a. target), you generally need to give them 3 weeks notice. You’ll be booked as “standby” until they find you a match. However, last minute scheduling is sometimes possible. Call 1-800-SKY-LOOP (1-800-759-5667) to reserve your flight.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum features interactive toy trains, Lionel-style electric trains and a 20-scale mile long rail crossing of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Plus, this museum is the only accredited railroad museum in the entire United States. It is the largest permanent operating model railroad exhibit in North America with 27,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space.

Always expanding and always under construction are new exhibits that are created by local railroad clubs. Currently you can watch the construction of the Tehachapi Loop model by the La Mesa Model Railroad Club.

Also fascinating is the Toy Train Gallery, which is home to an impressive exhibit of an imaginary town with multiple train lines. The town changes with the seasons; look for autumn colors in the fall and Christmas lights in the Balboa Park 195 winter. Kids can even operate some of the trains with the push of a button!

Make sure not to miss a visit to the gift shop, which is filled with a fabulous array of railroad memorabilia for the railroad lover in your life. Their selection of vintage railroad posters is especially noteworthy. And if you are a history buff, their Erwin Welsch Research Library is a must.

The museum and gift shop are open Tues.–Fri., 11 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sat.–Sun. till 5 p.m. Admission is ($7) for adults, ($6) for seniors 65 and older, ($3) for students with ID, ($2.50) for active military with ID, and free for children 15 years and under. Admission includes access to their railroad history library.

Big attractions here are their themed birthday parties and special events for kids of all ages. Contact Ana Parra (619-696 -0199).

This museum houses military artifacts and memorabilia from the Civil War to the present. Impressive murals of Pearl Harbor and significant historical military events adorn the walls.

A touching tribute to members of the armed forces is their beautiful Veterans Memorial Garden. Divided into three sections, it honors those who served “in the air, on land and at sea” with a walkway of flags, an amphitheater, fountain and a B-24 replica.

The museum is open Tues.–Sun. 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Admission is ($5) for adults, ($4) for veterans and seniors, ($2) for students and free for military and their dependents with ID. Memorial services are held the fourth Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m. honoring San Diego veterans.
