Authentic Mexican cuisine and a festive spirit fill the air at this award-winning restaurant, celebrating its 33rd year in business this year.

Winner of the 2002 and 2008 San Diego Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion Award for Best Mexican Casual Restaurant and rated San Diego Best’s 2008 by Zagat.

This San Diego legend is a favorite of residents and their out-of-town guests. Perhaps it’s because the tortillas are made right before your eyes in their sidewalk window. The tortillas are served hot, plump and delicious.

You can order almost anything on the menu all day long. For breakfast the huevos rancheros are outstanding. Lunch and dinner present numerous choices. The oak-fired rotisserie chicken is a winner.

The carnitas are as delicious as they are famous. For a spicy treat, try the excellent Colorado burrito combination. This is not just any burrito. Filled with tender chunks of marinated beef and covered with two cheeses, it is really tasty. There’s plenty of seating and two cocktail bars. They have more than 100 quality tequilas to make your margarita perfect.

Open Mon.–Thurs., 7 a.m.–11 p.m.; Fri.– Sun., 7 a.m.–midnight ($8–$15). Happy hour Mon.–Fri. 3 p.m.–7 p.m. and 11 p.m.–2 a.m. Bar is open daily till 2 a.m. and their popular Taco Tuesdays run all day long.

Chef de Cuisine Brian Sinnott works with local farmers and producers in creating the restaurant’s fresh Southland coastal cuisine. His seasonal menus offer selections from Santa Ynez to Cabo San Lucas. In addition, the restaurant includes a vast wine library highlighting local vintners.

This restaurant also offers a variety of elegant indoor and outdoor settings. A row of three interior coastal cabanas, oversized booths with sheer draperies, provides intimate seating, creating a “room within a room” sensibility. The indoor bar provides an energetic setting and a feature wall of back-lit, “sunset” glass.

The restaurant’s new outdoor Sunset Bar, complete with fire pits, cocktails, appetizers and live entertainment, offers the perfect West Coast venue to watch the sun set over the Pacific.

They serve fresh seafood and steaks nightly with an emphasis on presentation and innovation. For example, a sensational appetizer is their crab, shrimp and lobster cake ancho aioli with a mango salsa. It’s a winner!

Another delicacy is the spicy tuna eggplant tempura. And their main course selections are equally spectacular! You can’t go wrong with their grilled king salmon with a mushroom-spinach risotto or their sizzling 16-oz certified angus New York steak with mashed potatoes. Equally delicious is the tapenade roasted organic half chicken with broccolini, polenta cake and a tarragon.

Then there is steamed Alaskan king crab legs. You will love this place. They also have two private dining rooms and a spacious patio to host your next big event.

Lunch is served Tues.-Sun. Dinner is served beginning at 5 p.m. nightly ($18.95-$42.95) with a happy hour from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. daily in their Vodka Lounge featuring more than 100 vodkas. Their cocktail lounge specials are attractions in themselves. For example Wine Wednesdays offer 50 percent off selected bottles of wine.

This place is a favorite dining destination for residents and out-of-towners alike. The reason for its local appeal is that it’s surrounded by apartments, condos and single-family homes. Plus, their chef, who graduated from a famous culinary school, creates memorable entrées at affordable prices. It’s an unbeatable combination. And their menu which changes every three months always gets rave reviews.

The glazed salmon fillet appetizer, for example, is finished with sesame seeds and will definitely get your attention. So will the sizzling Kansas City 12-oz. bone-in New York strip steak accented with a tantalizing herb butter. Also very memorable is the cioppino, which is made with fresh fish, shrimp, scallops, clams and calamari simmered in their flavorful tomato broth with a hint of fennel. It’s served with a toasted baguette slice of bread.

The white sea bass is also a showstopper. Desserts like their fruit cobbler or their tantalizing sorbets will seal the deal and make you a regular at Bistro 39. Ask about their wine dinners, too!

Their daily happy hour starting at 4 p.m.–7 p.m. is legendary.

Winner in 2010 for Best Steak House Casual at the Gold Medallion Awards. Here, the locals have been gathering for four decades to enjoy this restaurant and popular cocktail lounge. It’s also the perfect place to view sporting events. Since its establishment in 1971, Bully’s East has served more prime rib than any other San Diego restaurant, preparing only USDA choice, Midwestern, corn-fed aged beef.

Prime rib lovers will be delighted that they serve prime rib in 8-oz. cuts all the way up to “Beast” that weighs in at a whopping 38-oz. Diners who can finish this impressive steak will get to join Bully’s East’s Club 38 and receive a free T-shirt. Prepared by Chef Luis Martinez, the eclectic menu offers filet minon, top sirloin, rib eye, porterhouse, fresh seafood, ribs, chicken and daily specials. It has been a longtime gathering place for professional athletes and sports officials as well as visitors.

The bar is well stocked and their personable bartenders are delighted to mix up your favorite libation. You may enjoy “full-service dining” at both the main bar and the legendary “horseshoe” low bar. They serve over 30 different appetizers and a Bistro Bar menu. Enhancing your dining experience are the patented cozy red leather booths. They also have nice table seating for families and large groups. Desserts are no less spectacular. Desserts range from warm bread pudding with whiskey caramel sauce to their awesome chocolate lava cake a la mode. Top off your meal with a famous kheoki coffee. When San Diegans think of prime rib Bully’s East is their first choice.

At the eastern tip of romantic Harbor Island are two restaurants under one roof, Island Prime and C Level Lounge, which offers dazzling views of the bay and the downtown San Diego skyline.

For spectacular seating at C Level Lounge, ask for table 212 or ask to sit outdoors on their bayview patio. The key note to what makes Chef Deborah Scott’s C Level Lounge exceptionally good and highly recommended is that all the entrées emphasize good taste and good health. One such entrée is Kemo Sabe’s black and white sesame salmon.

Other winners are the blackened catfish and the chili rubbed 10-oz. prime flat iron steak. Also served is a host of 16 appetizers and excellent desserts. An excellent conclusion to a memorable meal is their key lime pie, which is as big as it is delicious.

This festive, happy and friendly Mexican restaurant is celebrating 40 years of success. They have everything you’re looking for and a whole lot more. A big attraction is that it sits atop the air tower at Montgomery Field, offering diners an unobstructed view of private and commercial planes taking off and landing at the airport.

While this is a big attraction, it isn’t what brings customers back again and again. It’s the delicious, beautifully-presented Mexican food and the friendly atmosphere that brings diners back again and again. A real showstopper is the best tasting chicken and shrimp fajita you have ever had in your entire life. It’s heaped with buttered shrimp, savory strips of chicken, and strips of sliced green bell pepper, lots of sautéed onions and tomatoes.

Another winner is the chicken mole, which is as savory as it is delicious. A perfect conclusion to a memorable meal is the apple cinnamon tortilla with a scoop of ice cream. For taste, selection, atmosphere and an awesome view, this is the place.

Don’t forget that they have a very impressive Champagne Brunch on Sundays, from 9am-3pm ($12.95). Open for lunch and dinner Mon.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri. and Sat. till 10 p.m.,
and Sun., 9 a.m.–9 p.m., ($9.50–$15.25). House specials ($9.25–$13.50).

From high atop the 11th floor of the Hotel La Jolla is the one and only Clay’s La Jolla. Fabulous-tasting progressive California bistro cuisine is artistically created by owner/chef Clay Bordan. And new this season is an equally impressive vegetarian menu. Add a breathtaking panoramic sunset ocean view. Ask for table 12. A savory recommendation is the certified Angus New York steak.

A delicious vegetarian entrée getting rave reviews is a savory goat cheese ravioli dish. It’s made with spinach and ovendried tomatoes in a fresh chive garlic cream sauce and topped with pine nuts. Not to be overlooked is the cedar roasted wild salmon. Great complements to any meal are the lobster bisque with Point Rayes blue cheese, brioche, crostini and chive essence. Equally delicious is their specialty salad made with goat cheese, blue crab and shiitaki mushrooms.

Not to be overlooked are their incredible desserts. A romantic rooftop setting and exceptional cuisine make Clay’s an absolute winner. Open for breakfast ($8–$15), lunch and dinner ($19.95–$33). Vegetarian entrées ($22–$26). Also featuring the Sky Lounge with extended daily happy hour 4 p.m.–7 p.m. with drink specials and half off appetizers. Live entertainment Wed.–Sun.

In one of La Jolla’s most romantic settings, this restaurant overlooks the ocean and the beautiful La Jolla Cove. Romantic sunsets and dramatic views are the order of the day. And the cuisine is just as great. For a really romantic table, ask for table 7 or 20 inside, or table 75, 76 or 77 outside.

As you would expect, fresh seafood is the specialty. A real crowd pleaser is the slow roasted salmon with tomato chantelle mushroom couscous, seasonal vegetables and meyer lemon fennel cream. Another winner is the Macadamia nut crusted halibut with a bonita sweet potato plantain mash accented with Thai basil oil and a keylime beurre blanc.

Another great recommendation is their filet mignon with marscapone-garlic Yukon gold potatoes and a shallot demiglace. Another plus is the Oyster Bar, which is open daily after 3 p.m. It is the perfect place for shellfish delicacies. This is California dining at its best. Children’s menu. Validated underground parking.

Open for lunch Mon.–Sat., 11:30 a.m.– 3 p.m. ($10–$30); dinner daily 5:30 p.m.–10 p.m. ($18–$50). Sunday Brunch 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m. ($8–$24). Happy hour Mon.–Fri., 3 p.m.–9 p.m. except Thurs. and Fri. martini night, which is from 3 p.m.–9 p.m. ($5). Sushi bar open Thurs.–Sat. after 3 p.m.

The restaurant’s bar is open till midnight. For a sweeping view of the restaurant and huge cruise ships docked at the pier, ask for table 46. This delightful restaurant has a definite British flavor with ales, darts, bangers and mash and the like. Get into the spirit of it all and try their popular fish-and-chips. This best seller is prepared in the traditional English way, beer battered and served with English cut chips and a creamy coleslaw. Crisp, moist and delicious, they do justice to the Crown.

For more hearty fare, the Shepherd’s pie is a meal in itself. It features tender ground beef with bits of carrots and celery smothered with mashed potatoes and gravy. This dish is not only filling, but really delicious. Of course, there are more familiar items such as burgers and sandwiches, wraps and salads, even stir-fry, steak and seafood. And their daily breakfast is a great way to start the day. Plus, you can enjoy your favorite sporting events on their five high-definition flat-screen TVs.

At Fat City Steakhouse, it’s the exceptional steaks that keep their customers coming back again and again. Their beef is hand-cut on-site and aged for 21 days before it’s grilled to perfection. They offer a signature steak called the House Special, but every cut they serve tastes like it is the house special. One example is the prime bone-in rib eye steak, which is as delicious to taste as it is to look at.

No less inspiring is the juicy and tender porterhouse steak, which barely fits on the huge platter it’s served on. Meals also come with your choice of shoestring potatoes, baked potato, basmati rice or fresh vegetables.

They also have a nice selection of chicken and seafood entrées including the grilled salmon fillets. Dine on their outdoor terrace surrounded by lush plants or inside with seating in plush black leather booths. Their house dessert is also something to rave about! It’s their homemade banana cream pie, which rivals every other signature dessert in town.

Adding to the mystique of this landmark restaurant is their popular cocktail lounge. It has an early California gold rush bar, which actually came from a gold mining town in Northern California. Fat City Steakhouse is centrally located in Little Italy near downtown San Diego so it’s easy to find. And this is especially true at night with its eye-catching pink and baby blue neon lights that light up the sky.

From the moment you walk into this trendy Japanese restaurant, you’ll see what makes Harney Sushi so unique. The stylish decor and DJ playing hip music make this the perfect place for a night out. They feature more than 40 sakes, 25 award-winning wines, microbrews from local breweries, a private VIP booth and more than 35 gourmet specialty rolls.

All of their entrées are beautifully and artistically presented under the watchful eyes of their master chef Anthony Sinsay formerly of Nobu and the SLS Hotel. And they taste as good as they look!

Their extensive menu of mouthwatering options makes it difficult to decide what to order. A great way to start any meal is with the ahi poke. It’s diced ahi tuna mixed with chuka salad, green onions, ponzu sauce, sesame seeds and togarashi chili spice and served in a martini glass. Another delicious entrée is their signature Miso Harney roll. It’s eel, cream cheese and avocado tempura friedto perfection and drizzled in eel sauce and sesame seeds.

They also offer nigiri, sashimi, tempura, sushi combinations and a variety of Japanese entrées. Plus, it’s the only place in San Diego with its own sake bar! Harney Sushi has enhanced the art of presentation, perfected the taste of sushi and created a trendy atmosphere making it the best of the best in Japanese dining.

Open for lunch Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m.; and dinner nightly 5:30 p.m.– midnight. Late night happy hour 10 p.m.–midnight nightly.

So slide into a roomy booth or grab a window seat and enjoy the fun-filled atmosphere of happy, laughing people.

For starters the fresh-tasting ceviche is to die for. And their mouthwatering Southern California fries topped with melted cheeses, sour cream and guacamole are fabulous! You won’t find better tasting calamari anywhere. Awesome sandwiches include their savory portabello with huge wedge fries. And their tri-tip served on a grilled garlic buttered French roll with fresh pico de gallo is second to none.

They serve delicious wraps, fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, huge burgers, fish tacos, seafood and appetizers galore. Everything is huge, fresh and delicious! They even have a menu for children.

Fun is always on tap when you dine at Rock Bottom Brewery. This giant in the microbrewing industry has an excellent location in La Jolla. You’ll discover that their restaurant and microbrewery is a perfect place for great tasting food and delicious local handcrafted award-winning beer. It’s also an ideal gathering spot with friends and family.

To add more credibility to its steller reputation, the Rock Bottom Brewery organization was named the Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year for 2008 at the Great American Beer Festival. More accolades were bestowed on this top brewery when a Silver Medal was also awarded to their La Jolla Brewmaster, Marty Mendiola, for his Irish-Style Red Ale called Ragtop Red.

True beer enthusiasts need to join Rock Bottom’s complimentary Mug Club. Members automatically get their beer in 20-oz. mugs for the price of a 16-oz. pint! If that weren’t enough, Mug Club members also earn rewards by presenting their Mug Club card to the server at each visit. The card keeps track of your visits while accumulating points which become prizes like T-shirts and BBQ sets. You can even earn credit to be put toward the bill!

Once a customer drinks the equivalent of a keg over time, their name is put on a plaque and mounted on the infamous Wall of Foam. To join, simply ask your server and then register online at [rockbottom.com].

Also popular here are their Tuesday Pint Nights and their rockin’ happy hours. Adding to the mix is that they often feature local bands to make their Saturday bar scene even more fun and eventful. Another plus is their beer to-go policy, which some say is the best-kept secret in La Jolla. Just think, instead of a store bought brew you can have a fresh, handcrafted award-winning beer-to-go! A typical Growler is only ($12.95).

Their obsession with beer is legendary, yet their passion for great food runs just as deep. From their commitment to fresh ingredients, to their homemade desserts, every inspired recipe reflects the artistry and love that makes the Rock Bottom experience unlike any other.

This brewery restaurant knows how to satisfy its customers. So you know everything they do is first class. For starters their award-winning Brewmaster Marty Mendiola is an expert at brewing handcrafted beers. They even offer a complimentary brewery tour. The restaurant strives to serve great-tasting cuisine made from a repertoire of more than 200 recipes. They even update their menu every six months.

A recommended entrée is their sizzling New York steak, which is a 14-oz. cut of steak served on a sizzling skillet with melted butter, white cheddar mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked vegetables. The grilled mahimahi is also very good. They even have an in-house baker, who makes all of their desserts. At Rock Bottom they are serious about their food and crazy about their beer. So you know this place has got to be good! Banquets up to 120 people.

Being selected as a Gold Medallion Award Winner in 2005 by the San Diego Chapter of the California Restaurant Association is an award of distinction that places this restaurant above its peers.

You’ll be instantly impressed with this restaurant’s warmth and upscale contemporary decor with its abundance of inviting booths and tables. Their cocktail lounge is also a local favorite especially during happy hour. This innovative restaurant’s most recent accolade is that they are now a licensed wine bar and retail store selling the best wines, often below retail prices.

They are also well-known for their wine dinner series with famous winemakers and they also do not charge a corkage fee on Tuesdays. Highly recommended is the tender grilled filet mignon topped with a savory green peppercorn brandy sauce, served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The grilled Atlantic maple glazed salmon and the pan-fried buttermilk catfish will almost melt in your mouth. Save room for a slice of their delicious, warm bread pudding. You will undoubtedly be delighted with this superb dining experience.

Plus, there are several tables as well as a large enclosed patio where you can be served complete meals with steamed rice, miso soup and a Japanese salad.

Their list of appetizers is almost as long as your arm, with 25 choices, including sashimi to skewers of teriyaki chicken. Yes, there’s an abundance of fresh sushi as well as all sorts of rolls eel, tuna, shrimp and more.

Be sure to try their Mission Beach roll, which is a local favorite. Another favorite is their sushi pizza. This entrée is worth the trip to Mission Beach just to try it. Imagine a large ring made of California roll, covered with yellowtail and crabmeat.

It is artfully decorated with a wonderful secret sauce called ecstasy sauce; then it’s broiled quickly in an oven so that the top is crispy and warm. You have never tasted anything so delightful. Another winner is the baked scallops with roller coaster sauce!

Parking: valet ($2), street parking and a self parking lot a block north of Saska’s on the same side of the street. Be sure to notify the hostess when you arrive, or else they will tow your car.

Featured in a rustic nautical setting are Saska’s delicious fresh seafood selections and fabuloustasting steaks. The Saska’s secret to their delicious – tasting steaks is the “Saska’s Method” of preparing each steak.

Recommended entrées include filet mignon wrapped in bacon and served with mushrooms. Hungry diners won’t go hungry when they order The Duke, a 16-oz. sirloin cut for the serious eater.

Equally spectacular is the fresh fish selection, which may include local swordf ish, northern halibut, bass and Pacific salmon. Best of all, the sea food is never frozen or fried.

For romantic seating ask for the corner booth by the f ireplace in the dining room. Plan to dine here.

Open daily for lunch 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m.inside or on their outdoor deck or patio, weather permitting ($7–$15). Featuring late night dining: dinner Sun.–Thurs., 5 p.m.–midnight; Fri.–Sat. till 1 a.m. ($10–$25). Their Weekend Brunch is served 10 a.m.–1 p.m. ($5–$10). They have a happy hour daily, 3 p.m.–6 p.m. in the Sky Bar featuring reduced drinks and special menu items.

Winner of the San Diego Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion Award in 2010 for Best Neighborhood Restaurant. And in 2006 for Best American Casual Dining and Chef of the Year, Susan Sbicca. Expect to enjoy modern American cuisine served in a seaside village setting with ocean-view terrace dining.

Plus, Tuesday and Thursday are half-price wine by the bottle nights, so be sure to make reservations. Your host Dan and his wife Susan, who is the chef, have truly created a Del Mar treasure. It is unpretentious yet sophisticated and frequented by an upscale crowd of locals from around the Del Mar area.

For the best ocean-view seating, ask for table 301. A great beginning to any meal should be a cup of the lobster-shrimp bisque. Also delicious is the marvelous maple roasted pork prime rib with vanilla scented sweet potatoes along with a bourbon chantilly sauce.

For dessert order the fudge brownie with espresso gelato topped with a chocolate and carmel sauce. They are also big on banquets here. You can even rent out the entire restaurant for up to 200 people, or for smaller groups, reserve the wine room with its ocean view, which accommodates up to 16 people.

Open for lunch Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m., weekend breakfast & lunch Sat.–Sun., 9 a.m.–3 p.m.($7.25–$21); dinner nightly from 5 p.m. ($14–$28). Happy hour daily 4 p.m.–6:30 p.m. in the bar.
