1500 OCEAN, The Del’s signature restaurant, opened in 2006 to rave reviews in the Wine Spectator and Bon Appetit. Chef de Cuisine Brian Sinnott works with local farmers and producers in creating the restaurant’s fresh Southland coastal cuisine. His seasonal menus offer selections from Santa Ynez to Cabo San Lucas. In addition, the restaurant includes a vast wine library highlighting local vintners.

This restaurant also offers a variety of elegant indoor and outdoor settings. A row of three interior coastal cabanas, oversized booths with sheer draperies, provides intimate seating, creating a “room within a room” sensibility. This is Oceanside and North County’s most spectacular new restaurant. It overlooks the Oceanside Pier and it’s breathtaking sunset view is unsurpassed! They serve fresh seafood and steaks nightly with an emphasis on presentation and innovation. For example, a sensational appetizer is their crab, shrimp and lobster cake ancho aioli with a mango salsa. It’s a winner!

Another delicacy is the spicy tuna eggplant tempura. And their main course selections are equally spectacular! Since Al’s opened in 1991, it has been a local favorite. And yes Al, who spent many years in Hawaii, will most likely be on hand to greet you! For breakfast he’ll probably recommend one of six types of eggs Benedict or their famous cinnamon coconut macadamia nut french toast. Lunch favorites include salads, Angus beef burgers and homemade soups.

This is one restaurant where you’ll get your money’s worth. Breakfast is served all day and lunch served from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Babcock & Story, often called B&S, was named after The Del’s visionary founders, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, two mid-western businessmen who dreamed of building a resort hotel that would be the “talk of the Western world.”

Babcock & Story Bar is designed to take advantage of the spectacular seaside setting. The original 46-foot handcrafted mahogany bar, which was brought by ship from Philadelphia around Cape Horn in 1888, is the centerpiece for the bar. B&S Bar offers signature margaritas, blended tropical drinks, unique martinis, California premier wines, seasonal specialty coffee beverages and espressos. B&S Bar also features light fare, a sushi bar (Thursday – Sunday) and nightly musical entertainment.

At the eastern tip of romantic Harbor Island are two restaurants under one roof, Island Prime and C Level Lounge, which offers dazzling views of the bay and the downtown San Diego skyline.

Carol’s Restaurant is perfectly situated in a high-ceiling room dominated by a huge fireplace, the restaurant seems to be of another, perhaps medieval, time. Ask for seating inside next to the fireplace or on their delightful terrace overlooking their Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. Their patio is covered by a pergola and nestled between the restaurant and the Cabernet vines provide a great place for al fresco dining when weather permits, which is most of the time.

They are open for lunch only, Wednesday through Sunday, 11:30am to 2:30pm (11:30am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday). Carol’s has a selection of luncheon salads, sandwiches, grilled fish and steak, and pasta dishes. Their impressive wine list features Baily and other Temecula Valley wines, as well as a handful from outside the Valley.

This impressive Mexican restaurants in Old Town’s State Historic Park is a real find. The atmosphere is warm and festive and the food is delicious. At night you can even dine under the stars. An added plus is that they also feature live Mexican music while you dine.

Of course a great way to start is with one of their huge frosty and famous Cadillac margaritas. While their legendary house margarita is excellent, their Angel’s Share, which is made with Gran Centenario Rosangel Tequila is even better! A great beginning to any meal is their hearty albondigas soup, which was the best-tasting albondigas soup this reviewer has ever had.

Also recommended are their moist chicken tamales made with white corn and filled with spicy chicken, then topped with their enchilada and suiza sauce. Just as enjoyable are their hearty combos such as their enchilada and taco plates.

Their carne asada and guacamole burrito is yet another winner. It’s made with a thinly sliced flat steak that is marinated in beer and charbroiled with onions, tomato and garlic. For dessert have their peach cobbler with cinnamon ice cream.

This dish was an award winner at the Ensenada Seafood Competition.
