The brew house held a 25 horse power engine which operated the elevator, barley mill, mash tun and other apparatus. The mash tun could easily give shelter to twenty five men! The brewery’s fermenting cellar was filled with great tanks full of amber fluid, foaming and sparkling. The capacity of the plant was 75,000 barrels.

San Diego Brewing Company delivered their product to all parts of the city and county in bottles or in barrels. Their beers were said to “sparkle like nectar”. Sadly the company was removed from 32nd Street by the Navy in 1942 and replaced by a base for the Pacific Fleet.

Today the new San Diego Brewing Company hopes to carry on the tradition that was started so long ago. Along with an assortment of fresh beers brewed on the premises, San Diego Brewing Company offers fifty taps of beer every day, providing a brew to satisfy each and everyone. He needed a place to get great ingredients. So, one rare sunny day in San Diego in 1992, Jack opened Home Brew Mart: A home brewer’s nirvana filled with the supplies, ingredients, and conversation every home brewer needed to make better beer at home.

Home Brew Mart thrived and soon Jack was joined by Yuseff—a fellow home brewer with a similar dream—and home brewing awards, to boot. Together, they moved the brewery from Jack’s yard to the back room of Home Brew Mart, and opened Ballast Point Brewing.

In 1996, Ballast Point Brewing was born. Naming the beers was easy—Yuseff loves fishing, and he and Jack both love beer. So they brought the two together and started naming their beers after fish. After all, regular guys doing what they love—that’s what this was all about. Today, the beer labels still have fish on them as an homage to the brewery’s origins and as a reminder to always do what you love.

As customers began tasting Jack and Yuseff’s back room brews, they wanted more. So they bought the beer. A lot of it. By 2004, Ballast Point had outgrown its back room location and was going to have to move to keep up with demand.

Demand increased, so Ballast Point continued to grow! Home Brew Mart remained in its original location, serving home brewers and their beer dreams, alike. It turned out that Home Brew Mart was not only the perfect grounds for cultivating new beers, but also relationships with beer lovers who would eventually become employees, each one crucial to the brewing process and end product.

Almost 15 years after its inception, Ballast Point Brewing’s dedicated team of craftsmen (and women) is still innovating, trying new methods and ingredients, and working constantly to increase capacity to try to meet demand. Firehouse American Pale Ale, “Best Beer” by San Diego City Beat 08′

Firehouse India Pale Ale
Standing at 4.5 lbs of hops per barrel, the Firehouse IPA has a moderately high hop aroma with floral, earthy and citrus nature. It has a light copper appearance with a moderate hop bitterness. This crisp IPA is hoppy with no lingering aftertaste giving it perfect drinkability.

Leatherhead Brown Ale
Our brown ale is a perfect compliment to any meal. It’s smooth flavor and moderate mouth feel has a smoky nut flavor and finishes with just the right amount of caramel.

The Restaurant offers 260 seats, including a bar/lounge, large outside patio with 2 fire pits, 2 private dining rooms, a kid’s game room, and 15 plasma televisions to enjoy your favorite sporting events throughout the restaurant.

The brewery went through an expansion starting in late 2008 and became operational in mid 2009. Four double sized fermentors were installed in an old garage behind the current brewery. A cold box was erected adjacent to the garage and a bottling machine with a nice labeler are housed there too. There is a small barrel shed on the shady, north side of the garage.

A pub opened in early 2010 on the far side of the same building the brewery is in. Eventually, the goal is to have a small beer garden outside the pub.

Gerardo & Rosa moved their family to San Diego in 1991 and opened their first Italian restaurant, Leonardo’s in Rancho Bernardo. With family recipes making up the menu and gracious hospitality, the business flourished, and several more restaurants opened in the San Diego area, including Bell’ Agio in Tierrasanta and Trattoria Paradiso in Poway.

All the while, Gerardo never forgot his first love, winemaking. As a youth in southern Italy, he spent time working the vineyards promising himself that one day, he would return to that tranquility and make his own wine to enjoy with family and friends.

In 2002, Gerardo fulfilled that promise and produced his first wines. He dedicated the wine to his wife Rosa, calling it Primo Amore, which means ‘first love’ in Italian. The name also signifies his life-long passion for winemaking.

Try the lobster mac and cheese made with rock lobster tail and prosciutto. It’s a Falkner special.

The San Pasqual Winery was established in 2000 and is one of over a dozen local wineries prospering within San Diego county.
